Rosewood Bonsai - 紫檀盆栽 (ND9), Gardening, Plants on CarousellLog inJacaranda (J. mimosifolia) The Jacaranda mimosifolia is a subtropical tree native to South America that is very popular as an ornamental tree due to its beautiful and durable blue flowers. It has quite composite leaves. The Jacaranda is a semi-green tree of South America and can be about 50' (15m) tall and 40' (12m) wide. It also grows in the southern states of the United States, in the Mediterranean countries, South Africa and Australia. The Jacaranda has composed leaves, similar to ferns and beautiful blue or purple flowers of up to 2" (5cm) long and grouped in great panics. They appear in spring and early summer, and last for up to two months. The large capsules of woody seeds contain numerous winged seeds. Jacaranda's bark is thin, gray and becomes scaly when the tree matures. The bouquets are slender and slightly zigzag. Depending on temperatures and the amount of light, the tree can keep its leaves during the winter or drop them. In most cases the leaves fall before the flowers open. Specific Bonsai care guides for the Jacaranda mimosifoliaPlacement: Jacaranda needs a lot of light and temperatures should not fall under 15° C / 59° F. Especially when planted in a bonsai pot, Jacaranda trees should be protected from lower temperatures. If the Jacaranda stays inside the house all year will be difficult to reduce the size of the leaf. Don't put it above a heating device. In winter, when there is not enough light, the tree can drop all the leaves, but the new ones will grow in spring. At the end of May the blue Jacaranda can be placed outside in a sunny place or semi-shade. Water: Keep the Jacaranda rootball slightly wet. If it dries the leaves it shrinks, it browns and falls. If overloaded, the leaves become yellow and fall. Fertilization: Use liquid fertilizer during the growth period every week, in winter once every two weeks. Pruning and wiring: Jacarandas grow strongly. Shorten the new shoots to one or two pairs of leaves when four or five have grown. The strong pod becomes better in spring. The larger leaves can be cut at any time during the growing season. The wiring is possible but the cables must be removed after three months at the latest. Young shoots when they start to light. Repotting: Replace the Jacaranda every second year in spring and use a well draining soil mixture. Propagation: The Jacaranda tree can spread from soft wood seeds and cuts. Weights and diseases: The scale sometimes strikes the Jacaranda. Use a specific insecticide containing oil in that case. For more detailed information on these techniques, try our section.
