Cae disease in goats. Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Syndrome CAE CAE is a viral disease. The disease primarily affects the joints and the brain although the udder and lungs can also become infected. The CAE lentivirus is closely related to the Maedi Visna virus of sheep.
Two syndromes of CAE occur. Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus CAEV is a member of the small ruminant lentiviruses also includes ovine progressive pneumonia virus or OPPV of sheep which may. Therefore any body secretions which contain blood cells are potential sources of virus to other goats in the herd.
The virus is intimately associated with white blood cells. The CAE in goats also known as big-knee disease CAE caused by a virus known as lentivirus which is responsible for many other immunity suppression diseases in many species and most goat breeds are susceptible. In older goats a variation of the nervous form of CAE include circling head tilt and facial nerve paralysis.
CAE cause several diseases in goats like arthritis mastitis pneumonia loss of weight in adults and encephalitis swelling of the brain and brain stem in the young ones. Enlarged knees are a common symptom of CAEV in goats. In goats CAE may cause chronic disease of the joints and on rare occasions encephalitis in goat kids less than six months of age.
The joint form of CAE most often appears between one and two years of age. Goats can get multiple diseases and diseases such as CAE that cause wasting stress and affect the immune system make goats susceptible to other diseases. Photo by Mike Metzger MSU Extension.
Adult goats develop a chronic progressive arthritis whereas young goats develop a neurological syndrome with signs of paresis or paralysis. The virus is found worldwide but until this detection the disease has never been recorded on the island of Ireland. This is the first ever confirmation of the CAE virus in NI other than those recorded at post-import checks.
Similarly goats with Johnes disease. In older goats the same disease is seen as swollen joints particularly the knees.

Caprine arthritis encephalitis CAE is a viral disease of goats caused by a lentivirus called caprine arthritis encephalitis virusThe disease is found worldwide. It is caused by a lentivirus a type of retrovirus which is a family of pathogens responsible for many immunodeficiency diseases in. Similarly goats with Johnes disease.
